LESSON #10 ENTRELAC STITCH
The entrelac concept can look like weaving, mosaic or patchwork. It can
be knitted in stockinette stitch, garter stitch, in one or many colors.
You can even add designs. You begin with a row of triangles. You can make
up how many stitches you want. Next you form an edge triangle to fill
in the corner and for a base to begin the squares. To form the squares
you pick up same amount of stitches each triangle started with and every
other row you will be knitting together one edge stitch and one stitch
from next triangle (these stitches are on the needle waiting for this
step). When we reach the other edge then we will pick up stitches but
instead of a square we will form a triangle. When this project is long
enough we will finish by forming another row of triangles filling out
the edge. To determine how many sts or triangles to begin with you will
have to knit a pattern gauge because every yarn is different.
ALL SIDE UNITS ARE TRIANGLES
INTERNAL ARE DIAMONDS
USE 40 STS TO CREATE 4 DIAMONDS AND TRIANGLES
USE ROUND KNITTING NEEDLE INSTEAD OF DOUBLE POINT
I USED #9 ROUND NEEDLE (4 1/2 STS, 5 ROWS) 40 STS = 16 1/2 " (Remember
you are knitting at an angle so make a gauge)
ENTRELAC STOCKINETTE STITCH
(see drawing with numbers)
PATTERN FOR 1 TRIANGLE: STOCKINETTE STITCH
CAST ON 40 STS
KNIT 2 ROWS GARTER for this gauge sample (you could begin with rib)
(triangles 1,2,3,4,)
ROW 1 *K2,TURN, P2 TURN
ROW 2 *K3,TURN,P3,TURN
ROW 3 *K4,TURN,P4,TURN
ROW 4 *K5,TURN,P5,TURN
ROW 5 *K6,TURN,P6,TURN
ROW 6 *K7,TURN,P7,TURN
ROW 7 *K8, TURN,P8,TURN
ROW 8 *K9,TURN,P9,TURN
ROW 9 *K10, TURN,P10, TURN
ROW 10 K10 *
REPEAT THESE 10 ROWS ACROSS GARMENT
SIDE EDGE TRIANGLE (knit or purl these stitches)
(triangle 5)
ROW 1 P2,TURN,K2,TURN
ROW 2 P1,INCREASE 1,S1,P1,PSSO,TURN,K3,TURN
ROW3 P1,INCREASE 1,P1,S1,P1,PSSO,TURN,K4,TURN

ROW 9 P1, INCREASE 1,P7,S1,P1,PSSO,TURN,K10,TURN
ROW 10 PURL 10
SQUARES (knit or purl these stitches just be sure you knit or purl together
one from the next triangle every other row as you make your square)
(squares 6,7,8)
WITH NEEDLE HOLDING UNWORKED STS, *PICK UP 10 STS ON RIGHT SIDE OF TRIANGLE,
TURN, PURL 10,TURN , K10, TURN, P9, P LAST ST TOG WITH 1ST STITCH OF TRIANGLE.(if
you want square instead of rectangle then K or P tog at the beginning
of next row everytime--rectangles are more graceful but squares are sometimes
wanted) CONTINUE UNTIL ALL STS OF TRIANGLE HAVE BEEN KNITTED TOGETHER
WITH THIS SQUARE ending with purl 9, purl together with last stitch, turn,
knit 10, turn, Purl 10 *REPEAT ACROSS garment.
OTHER EDGE TRIANGLE (knit or purl these stitches)
(triangle 9)
(THE OUTSIDE EDGE IS THE P 2 TOG OR K 2 TOG)
PICK UP 10 STS ON EDGE OF ANGLE (KNIT THEM ON OR PICK UP AND KNIT 10)
TURN, P 2 TOG, P 9
TURN, K9
TURN, P2 TOG, P8
TURN, K8
TURN, P2 TOG, P7
TURN, K7
TURN, P2 TOG, P6
TURN, K6
TURN, P2 TOG, P5
CONTUNUE UNTIL YOU HAVE ONE STITCH.TO CONVERT THE FIRST PATTERN ROUND
INTO A STRAIGHT-EDGE FINISHING ROUND, DO IT THE SAME WAY AS THE SECOND
PATTERN ROUND, REVERSING SHAPING. THIS MEANS THAT YOU TURN THE SHORT ROWS
1 STITCH FARTHER IN ON THE KNIT ROWS EACH TIME.
CONNECT DOTS

5 . 6 . 7 . 8 . 9
. 4 . 3 . 2 . 1 .
JUST FOR FUN TRY THIS STITCH
MOCK BOBBLE
Multiple of 4 done in 2 rows
Cast on 24 stitches for sample and knit 2 or 3 rows.
Row 1 (right side) Purl across row
Row 2 (wrong side) *k1,p1,k1 in same stitch, then purl 3 together* to
get rid of these 2 extra stitches. Repeat across row.
Row 3 Purl (right side)
Row 4 *Purl 3 together, K1,p1,k1 in same stitch* across row. (wrong side)
NEXT WEEK---DOUBLE DIAGONAL bring circle markers, needles, yarn either
for a sample or the real thing!!
